Liability if it wins

Profit if it loses

Risk multiple

"Risk multiple" is how many times your stake you stand to lose if the selection you laid actually wins.

How it works

When you lay a bet on an exchange, you act as the bookmaker for whoever backs that selection. If the selection loses, you keep their stake as profit, minus commission. If it wins, you must pay out their stake times the odds minus one. This is your liability.

Liability is the lay stake multiplied by the odds minus one. It grows fast at long prices, which is why laying outsiders carries far more risk than laying favourites for the same stake.

Worked example

Lay stake$50.00
Lay odds3.50 (+250)
Commission2%
Liability if it wins$125.00
Profit if it loses$49.00
